It has been since May that our baskets have barely been able to keep up, that our favorites (Little One, Pudgy, Mr. Slim and Big Guy) were never enough for the bountiful daily picking of endless sun-ripened, gorgeous, succulent fruits and fresh vegetables. Literally aglow with the summer sun, they loved their job, always ready to work overtime and to lend a helping hand to other baskets, sharing the load.
While they now sit dejected – largely unemployed…they haven’t given up – they still sit together in our kitchen, hoping…yearning for a call to work each day.
They smile ever so broadly when Maurizio picks them up in the morning to “make the rounds” and they beam with pride when they come in with even small amounts of late summer fruit
or tomatoes. It sure doesn’t take much to make them happy nowadays!
Even the first few walnuts were a source of joy for this sweet basket, for Little One, as we call him….
The gorgeous Indian summer flowers still today awe the guests, the baskets remember with aching nostalgia those days in the height of summer. As we took their mountains of ripe fruit to the inn, they too were greeted with enthusiastic “ohs and ahs” and admiration!
Sadly unemployed, they will be ready again in May to lend their helping hand!
